The current flowing through the high-voltage single-core cable generates an induced voltage in the lead package or metal shielding layer. When the cable line is long, the induced overvoltage exceeds the withstand voltage value of the cable sheath insulation, causing the cable sheath insulation layer to be broken down. For this reason, precautions must be taken to limit induced overvoltages, a better measure being the use of cable sheath protectors. The cable sheath protector is made of zinc oxide nonlinear resistor and covered with a high temperature resistant silicone rubber jacket. It is used at the non-grounded end of cable lines that are grounded at one end and at the insulated joints in cross-interconnected cable lines.
